#SOLARECLIPSE AND THE CHURCH

Unfortunately, several esteemed congregational leadership members from all over the country continue to unsympathetically make a mockery out of those who have made extensive efforts to witness the Total Solar Eclipse but, have not put forth similar effort in church support or attendance. The Solar Eclipse is more important to some because:
The church as a institution OVERALL is failing. Yes, there are churches who are building disciples and producing fruit which is visible in the lives of the parishioners, however, that is not a consistent theme. Until the church turns back to priotizing the needs of the community, more specifically the Word of God as it relates to love, service, sanctification, pure compassion and holiness she will continually struggle in leading the lost. Darkness has to submit to Light. Wherever Jesus went, darkness and brokenness submitted to Him. The problem is the presence of God does not continually dwell in our churches, universally. The LORD inhabits the praise of His people, and in that moment, Jesus shows up. But until our churches learn how submit to the authority of Christ and not the commandments of men, the church will continue to chase and desire what she was created to lead.
Jesus said in John 12:32, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.”
The church must stop blaming sinners and start lifting up God with a pure heart, clean hands and right spirit.
The bible says, “If My people, who are called by My name…” you know the rest. Be humble, pray, seek God, repent, and turn; namely, submit! Clergy, church members, people of God: deny yourselves, take up your cross and fellow Jesus, THEN you will become fishers of men!

Unification

unify“Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills” (1 Corinthians 12:1-11). Amen.

For this post, our central focal point will be centered on 1 Corinthians 12:7, “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.”

The term “all” is Biblical Defined as: with the rest: together with; likewise; at the same time.”

What Apostle Paul is saying in this passage is that the gift whereby the Spirit manifest itself is given to each for the profit of the whole body. Notice the letter S is capitalized in the word Spirit, therefore, Paul is talking about the Spirit of God, not the things we do well, but Paul is talking about purpose.

Apostle Paul is addressing the Corinthian Church in this letter so more specifically, he is outlining the purpose of the saints regarding the advantage of the church.  Read how the English Standard Version simply translates verse 7:

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for common good.”

This particular letter to the Corinthian Church, a letter of correction and discipline in which Paul addressed church issues: Division, Moral Negligence and lack of unity measured against the foundation of God’s love .

The city of Corinth was considered one of the most affluent cities in Greece serviced between two harbors, allowing goods to flow from Italy, Spain, Asia and Egypt thus creating an ethnically diverse population with a variety of religious influences.

In the City of Corinth at that time, there were at least 12 temples, serving all sorts of gods, as well as some Jews who were teaching that keeping the Old Testament Law could produce salvation. Which we know is incorrect, salvation only comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not through works –the law.

One of the most flourishing Temples, the goddess of love – a temple that employed over 1,000 male and female prostitutes. Immorality was so ingrained in the culture, unfortunately, the church in Corinth began to reflect the surrounding community. An issue that many of our Church communities continue to struggle with currently..  In fact, if we separated the ability to quote scriptures or sing hymns, and simply removed words like Jesus, God, Amen, hallelujah or Lord as well as similar Christian vernacular from the vocabulary of most believers measuring the baseline of a persons virtue: their behavior, their moral standards and their conduct, the resemblance between a believer and unbeliever would be almost identical for many.

If we measured Christianity as a whole against unbelievers, there would be an extremely thin contrast in the level of expressed love, the depth of abounding joy, or the outpouring of grace and humility…

If we measured Christianity as a whole against unbelievers, there would be an extremely thin contrast between the integrity between a saved soul and an unsaved soul.

If we measured Christianity as a whole against unbelievers, there would be an extremely thin contrast between the level of patience, discipline and long-suffering between someone who goes to church every Sunday and the Atheist who lacks the belief in the existence of God.

I will take it one step further… If we measured Christianity as a whole on social media against unbelievers on social media, there is a unsettling similarly between Christian’s exposing the sin of materialism and a unbeliever indulging in materialism; Christian’s embracing secular influences and the unbeliever abounding in secular influences. In fact, both the saint and the sinner propagate (promote) geed, lust, arrogance and most often, pride. We hear gossip in the church house and we hear gossip on the streets. The saint is posting revealing images in sexual stimulating attire, and the sinner is posting revealing images in sexual stimulating attire. The saint is showing off their luxury, wealth and material possessions and the sinner is showing off their luxury, wealth and material possessions.

I am not judging anyone’s growth period, nor am I proclaiming a complete perfected work in me, however, the activity of the indwelling Holy Spirit in the believer should be growing towards holiness. And, for most, the body of Christ is growing away from holiness.

This blending of cultures was exactly what Apostle Paul was addressing… The Christian community at that time was starting to be infiltrated with adultery, fornication, lying, hypocrisy, selfishness, anger, envy, greed and NOW they were even starting to war against one another concerning Spiritual Gifts…

Apostle Paul, therefore, wrote to instruct this gifted but immature church on how to address specific situations occurring there.

Anytime, God gives us a gift, it’s for the benefit of others – to enhance and embellish who they are, NOT who we are. Whatever gift God gives us is to further build His Kingdom, not to elevate our status!

The anointing Jesus has poured in you, isn’t even about you.

The anointing Jesus has poured in to us, our Spiritual Gift are for edifying, advancing and developing the Kingdom of God. It’s a tool to share the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. The anointing, the Spiritual Gifts that we possess are tools to share our testimony, strengthen the brethren and exalt Christ.

The Corinthian Church troubles prompted Paul to clearly outline proper moral conduct  utilizing practical instructions concerning the church, founded in the Old Testament. Encouraging believers to break from their old life and bond to their new life in Christ. A reality that we must continue to embrace as believers.

So Paul doesn’t eliminate the importance of the Old Testament, but connects it to Jesus Christ as “All Scripture is Godbreathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Addressing Spiritual Gifts in particular, Paul seeks to give us the proper perceptive and appropriate use of our rights as Christians WHICH IS to Unify in Diversity!!!

Listed below I breakdown our text verse by verse::

Verse 1. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

The term Spiritual separate from Christianity is defined as relating to, or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things; of relating to religion or religious belief.

Spiritual in connection to Christianity simply means alignment in Christ.

Notice that the word spiritual listed in this verse is lowercased (NKJV). Why is that important to take note? Because of the different cultures in Greece, a very diverse community at that time, many people worshiped different gods; idols. Their “spiritual” gifts were not Christ centered.

Unlike the Spirit of Christ, which is rooted out of love, the most flourishing spirit out of Corinth at that time was “sexual.” Paul knew this and was giving warning! That is why he says, “I would not have you ignorant.” As Christian’s, we too must recognized and separate ourselves from secular influences.

Verse 2.  You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led

Paul is allowing them to reflect on how far they’ve come in Christ through a swift yet humbling remembrance of their past. God will sometimes check you, before He corrects you – it’s called chastisement! Every once in a while God has to remind us of how lost we were without Him.

Apostle Paul’s statement at the end of the verse, “However, you were led…” release’s the church from condemnation. Paul, understanding his expressed image in God imparts grace. In the same manner, Jesus releases us from condemnation through repentance.

Brother and sister in Christ, guard your spirit. When reaching out to sinners, be sure to never down play the power of sin.

Verse 3. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

Accursed is defined as under a curse; doomed to evil or misery. What Apostle Paul is basically saying here, anyone who say’s they are speaking of the Spirit, but doesn’t accept Christ as Savior is a liar nor can anyone speaking under the Holy Spirit’s influence will say that Jesus is evil.

Remember: Jews were still preaching salvation through the Old Testament Law during this time and hadn’t acknowledge Jesus as there Lord and Savior, but taught He was a mere man, not divine. In addition, people were worshiping all sorts of gods.

The Spirit of God cannot be disconnected from Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ cannot be disconnected from the Father for they are One.

The most significant question we need to ask ourselves regarding any Spirit is, “Does it glorify Jesus?” Again, does it glorify Jesus? No one can say they are operating in the Spirit of God but their character doesn’t exalt Jesus.

Is your Spirit a reflection of Christ? Are you acting like a sinner on Saturday and saint on Sunday? The most notable difference between the two is a repentant heart which will visibly manifest over time. Do you continually seek God for guidance, are you submitting to what He is asking you, are you forgiving, loving, gentle… do you speak life into others? Do sincerely and humbly pray for those who use you?

Verse 4. There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

Just because we have the same Spirit of God, doesn’t mean we have the same gift. Don’t discern someone’s Spirit by their gift but by the glorification of Jesus in their gift.

  •  Spiritual Gifts;  anything that comes from God through a believer. All Spiritual Gifts are the manifestation of the indwelling Spirit of God within a believer’s life purposed for building up the body of Christ.
  • There are several different types of Spiritual Gifts of the Holy Spirit not limited to:
    • Teaching
    • Prophecy – a prediction of edification and comfort to men
    • Faith – the substance of things hoped for in the evidence of things not seen
    • Healing – Effect a curse through God supernatural power (ex. Jesus, Restoring sight)
    • The Working of Miracles – Having a heighten sensitivity to God’s presence
    • Discerning of the Spirits
    • Tongues and interpretation of the Tongues- Enables spiritual communication with a person who speaks another language, however, they’re speaking to God, not to man. Also, it can be viewed as a sign to unbelievers of that baptism of the Holy Ghost.

Verse 5. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.

For example, there is a difference of Offices in the Church: Clergy, Deacons, Missionary or Evangelist but we all should be operating in the same purpose; to Glorify Jesus Christ, “build Disciples, and teaching them to obey what Christ has commanded…” (Matthew 28:16-20).

Verse 6. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

In the church, some may have the gift of discernment or knowledge, another may have the gift teaching. Additionally, many churches have a Finance Team, Trustee Board, Secretary and Office Staff – all having different responsibilities, but who must work together to build the Kingdom of Heaven ensuring the effective operating of the Ministry which promote the glorification of Jesus Christ.

However, the greatest gift of all is love. And, the beauty of such a special gift, it is used in and outside the sanctuary to edify the body of Christ and build His Kingdom.

Verse 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

What does that mean: the gift whereby the Spirit manifest itself is given to each for the profit of the whole body. It’s not about you, it’s about serving and edifying the children of God – saints and sinners alike.

Verse 8. for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

For example: There may be an older Mother in the church that has a higher level of wisdom through experience which cannot be duplicated. At the same time there may be someone who has a Seminary Degree who obtains a wealth of knowledge, both gifts are useful and equally important in glorifying Christ.

Notice the beginning of verse 8 reads, “For to one is given by the Spirit…” It is foolish to compete over or compare a gift God has given. We struggle in this area. Instead of connecting with God on a deeper level to discern our own gift, many believers compete with those around us. This should not be so.

Verse 9-11 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

In the last 3 verses, Apostle Paul is reiterating; not only the diversity of gifts but also that Spiritual Gifts are purposed for Christ, and come only through His Spirit.

“Traces of those signs and wonders are still preserved among those who regulate their lives by the teaching of the Gospel.”- Origen
